Deal of the Year

Has your firm pulled off a ground-breaking corporate or property deal in 2016 that has really stood out or moved the dial in the past year? Then we want to hear from you. To qualify, the deal has to have completed within the past year. It does not have to be the biggest transaction, but it does have to be the best – whether it is a merger or acquisition of another company, a major leasing, investment or funding deal or an innovative joint venture.

What the judges want to see:

  • Details of why the deal was so ground-breaking, bold or innovative
  • Details of how the deal was struck and how challenging/complex it was
  • Details of how it was structured/funded and the likely returns/rewards
  • An idea of what impact the deal is likely to have and of the targets and time frame
  • A summary of why you feel you deserve to win this award

Developer of the Year

Are you the standout developer of the past year? Have you developed landmark schemes, pulled off ground-breaking deals, embarked on innovative joint ventures or pioneered new ideas that have changed the face of property development in the UK? We are looking to reward achievements specifically of the past year – ie. the period between December 2015 and 2016.

What the judges want to see:

  • Evidence of best-in-class achievements or initiatives that have been initiated or come to fruition in the past year
  • Evidence of a strong financial performance in the past year
  • Evidence of strong development activity
  • Innovation in the type of development undertaken or the way it is undertaken

This category aims to reward a bank, fund or private property company that has moved the dial in the way it has provided debt or equity financing in the past year. Has your firm been particularly innovative in its approach to develop finance or forward funding packages for example? Has it targeted new areas of growth? Has it done something that makes it stand out from the crowd? Then we want to hear from you.

What the judges want to see:

  • Evidence of a bold and innovative approach to property financing
  • Examples of specific achievements/landmark deals in the past year

  • An indication of an effective approach to risk and reward

Industrial Agency Team of the Year

This category is aimed at agencies – large or small – that provide leasing, sales, funding, site acquisition and investment sales (ie. pre-let sales) advice to the industrial property sector. It is open to commercial agents only and the entry should include financial information relating to the number of transactions, area of space transacted, transactional fee income, consultancy fee income repeat business and income per full-time fee earner. This is not an award for the biggest agency in this sector or the agency that does the most, it is an award for the best in perhaps some rather than all of these areas, so if you run a niche agency or are only focused on one region, this should not preclude you from entering.

What the judges want to see:

  • What you have done to move the dial in an industrial agency in the past year
  • Details of key deals you have done and why they were so significant
  • Evidence of a tangible improvement in performance in the past year

Entry in this category does not preclude firms from also entering sector-specific categories (eg. Office Agency Team of the Year or Industrial Agency Team of the Year).

It is also open to building surveyors, firms that provide planning/development or environmental advice and practices that are strong in arbitration, claims, expert witness or legal services. It is not open to facilities management companies or other property advisers.

What the judges want to see:

  • Details of why 2016 was such a strong year for your professional agency and how much business has grown
  • An indication of the range of professional work you do and specialist areas you have developed – and how these have changed over the past year
  • An indication of the resources/staff numbers you have in your team and what you have done to optimise or increase these in the past year
  • Details of key instructions/commissions you have won in the past year and why they were so significant
  • Evidence of business development or staff/training initiatives

This award is aimed specifically at property companies (active in development and/or investment) that have made a particular impact on the property industry during the judging period of December 2015 to December 2016. Have you been involved in the innovative structuring, funding or partnering initiatives? This award is aimed at companies who manage national or international property funds but are themselves based in the UK. We’re looking for someone who stands out from the crowd because they’re doing something particularly audacious or different – boldly investing in a new or emerging property sector, targeting new regions or achieving demonstrable success in a sector or region others have not. Have you outperformed your competitors, delivered or over-delivered on what you promised investors or spotted trends ahead of the market? Do you have a strong and growing investor following? Proptech Company of the Year

These are property companies that are proactively using technology to disrupt the property sector. Putting technology at the heart of what they are doing, they range from online portals and estate agents through property data companies to those using cutting-edge technology that is transforming the way the industry operates. Many, but not all, will be start-ups. Some might be occupiers. They will all be entrepreneurs and disruptors who have moved the dial in the past year. Innovation is the key criterion – what everyone on the shortlist will have in common is that they have done something particularly innovative or game-changing in the past 12 months – but only those who have made significant progress in terms of progressing from the drawing board to implementation stage will be in serious contention for the overall prize.

What the judges want to see:

  • Evidence of genuine innovation in the past year
  • A robust business model
  • Creativity and vision in the way they are implementing their business plan
  • Strong financial expectations and forecasts
  • Evidence of strong engagement with the industry

We are looking for an exemplar building, project or initiative that has raised the bar in terms of sustainability or environmental impact in the built environment over the past year. If you are a developer, occupier, investor or consultant that has worked on something truly ground-breaking in the last year, we want to hear from you. Has your building achieved a best-in-class environmental accreditation standard rating (eg. BREEAM, LEED, SKA)? Have you done something particularly innovative that has moved the dial by reducing resources (energy, water, materials) your buildings use? Has it led to significant positive environmental impacts, efficiencies, improved user experience and/or cost savings?

What the judges want to see:

  • Details of the building, project or initiative and how sustainability was considered throughout its development lifecycle
  • Why you think your achievement is so ground-breaking or innovative compared with current industry practice
  • Details of the positive environmental impact it has had – including actual operational performance evidence
  • Details of resource efficiencies, positive user feedback and/or cost savings achieved
  • Evidence of how you have collaborated across disciplines and/or with developer, landlord and tenant to achieve sustainable outcomes

The Placemaking Award

This category aims to reward commercial or mixed use developments that have regenerated or physically improved the built environment on and around a particular site, disused building or location. The award is aimed primarily at private-sector projects, including mixed-use but NOT pure residential. These projects might have bought land, buildings or localities back into sustainable economic use or created a built environment that changes the perception or use of a location. Schemes must have been fully or substantially completed by December 2016. Projects or initiatives still at the planning stage are not eligible.

What the judges want to see:

  • Evidence of innovation and boldness  of vision
  • Evidence that the execution matches the scale of that vision
  • Details of the positive social and economic impact the scheme has had on the local community or area
  • Details of how funding was raised
  • Details of how the local community was engaged and any concerns handled
  • Details of difficulties that had to be overcome – such as the short-term impact by the development work
  • A summary of why you feel you should win this award

Young Personality of the Year

We are looking for the stars of the future, the individuals who show the sort of entrepreneurialism, tenacity and vision to really steer the industry in years to come.

You can hail from any part of the industry – be it a property company, a proptech company, the agency world, law… if you eat, drink and sleep property and lead where others follow, we want to hear from you.

Entrants must be 40 or under.
